US Fish and Wildlife Service imposes deadline for screening heater treater ventsAfter reports that an unusually high number of migratory birds have been entering heater treaters at many wellsites through vents and other openings, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has issued a deadline for all operators to screen any openings on heater treaters. Stated in the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), as of March 1, 2007 carcasses found in heater treater filters or holding areas will subject producers to a fine of $15,000 per take. Producers should screen any openings that could be used for bird intrusion and clean out any carcasses from filters and holding areas. The FWS does not require a specific size for screening or mesh, as long as it is appropriately sized to prevent intrusion by any bird species that may come in contact with the heater treater.
